Bordeaux

2          2019 Château de Fontenille. £33.00. From the Entre-Deux-Mers region this red Boredeaux with a blend pf 80% merlot and 20 Cabernet Sauvignon is well structured and full bodied with characteristic plush red fruit flavours and smoky, cigar-box notes on the palate.    

8          2020 Pomerol, Jean-Pierre Moueix. £42.50. An accessible, supple and classic wine bottled by the company that own Chateau Petrus. The 2020 has smooth tannins with ripe fruits and floral note.

9          2019 Corney and Barrow Saint-Emilion, Grand Cru, Chateau Barrail. £42.50. An appealing well balanced wine with elevated perfumed notes with a luscious bramble character, hints of spice and clean minerality.

10        2020 Château La Courolle, Saint-Émilion. £32.50. The very aromatic nose is incredibly flattering, harmoniously combining vanilla and wild strawberries. The mouth is supple with silky tannins.

11         2020 Château Macquin, Saint-Georges-Saint-Emillion. £34.65. This wine is a deep ruby red in colour, with alluring aromas of ripe red cherry, cassis and a hint of liquorice. The palate is full-bodied with silky, ripe tannins. Concentrated flavours of ripe red fruits, tobacco and graphite are balanced by a lifted acidity. (Vegan)

14        2018 Château Barrail du Blanc, Grand Cru Saint-Émilion. £45.75. This tiny estate always produces tender, 'heart on sleeve' wines; but with grip and the ability to drink young and age well. Deepest ruby in colour, the nose is red fruit, dark and earthy. The palate by contrast is silky on entry, with generous, sweet flavours, a succulent, medium-weight concentration and excellent, fresh length.

15        2018 Château Tour St Bonnet, Cru Bourgeois, Medoc. £36.00. This cru Bourgeois has been in the hands of the Lafon family for more than a hundred years. The wine is aged in large oak foudres, rather than small oak casks, for 18 months to preserve the intensity and concentration. Intense blackberry fruits alongside forest floor and cedar notes. Medium bodied with concentrated flavours. A great value wine that punches well above its weight.

16        2014 Château Dutruch Grand Poujeaux, Moulis Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. £43.50. Château Dutruch is a satisfyingly rich, structured, classical claret offering real quality and character with some good bottle age and really drinking well

18        2010 Château Langoa Barton, Saint Julien. £98.50. Exceptionally fragrant this year, this Ch. Langoa Barton wine displays enticing aromas of both red and black fruits. The fruit continues strongly on the palate, but the wine retains a very fine elegance, while the tannins and acidity imbue it with an excellent structure, and there is excellent persistence and length on the finish.

19        2018 Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal, Pauillac, Grand Cru Classé. £89.75. Pretty blackberries, blueberries and violets with some crushed-raspberry aromas follow through to a full body with wonderfully crafted and pure tannins that intertwine wonderfully with the blue fruit and blackberries. Long and endless. A triumph here. From biodynamically grown grapes

21        2018 Chateau Branaire-Ducru, Saint Julien, Grand Cru Classé. £115.00. This year, the wine sees a little more Merlot in the blend than usual as did the Petit Verdot.  It is quite a voluptuous style for Branaire, which comes from the last-harvested plots on clay. The core of the wine remains typically Branaire: perfumed, discrete and sculpted. Blend: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 4% Petit Verdot                  

French Country Wine

22        2014 Seigneurie de Crouseilles, Madiran. £33.00. Château de Crouseilles Madiran expresses beautifully the distinctive aromas and flavours of the Tannat grape. Silky on the mouth with rich ripe notes of blackcurrants, complimented by hints of fresh black pepper and cloves. This savoury wine is generous and has wonderfully ripe and sweet tannins. To pair with grilled meat and matured cheeses. 

Burgundy

40        2023 Beaujolais -Villages, Dominique Morel. £30.50. Delicate cherry perfumes with red berry fruit flavours and fresh acidity makes this is a great example of Beaujolais.

42        2022  Fleurie, Dominique Morel. £37.25. Classic Cru Beaujolais with an excellent Gamay nose with hints of fruit and toffee.  However there is enough structure on the palate to give the wine body and finesse.

46        2020 Pinot Noir Bourgogne Rouge, Louis Jadot (France). £40.50. An oak-aged Burgundy with a deliciously concentrated Pinot Noir character, cherried fruit and soft tannins.

50        2019 Aloxe Corton, Clos de la Boulotte Domaine Nudant. £79.25. From this small 1.12 hectare enclosed vineyard ('clos') owned totally by Domaine Nudant, just across the road from the 1er Cru vineywards, this is a lovely Burgundy of medium weight, produced from 60 year old vines. It has an elegant, intense, fruity nose, with a supple palate of red fruits with ripe and light tannins and rich finish.

58         2012 Hospices de Beaune Premier Cru Cuvée Maurice Drouhin. £127.50. Black cherry red in colour. Luscious development in oak with classic earthy farmyard aromas. Hints of blackcurrant on the palate with a secondary taste of saddle leather. Very seductive quality wine with years of potential life.

60         2020 Gevrey Chambertin, Domaine Perrault. £89.25. The expressive and complex nose has aromas of red fruits with woody notes. We find these same aromas on the palate which are well enveloped by delicately blended tannins. Perfectly balanced.  

62        2017 Clos Du Roi, Beaune Premier Cru, Domaine Chanson. £78.75. Intense ans full of reipe dark raspberry fruit with a leiquer like intensity. A warming note of spice on the palate, showing good texture, refined tannins and a long, fresh finish.  in colour with an inky, almost smoky nose packed full of blueberry and damson fruit, some super-silky, ripe tannins but with a vibrant, juicy finish.

64        2020 Pernand-Vergelesses, Les Vergelesses, Premier Cru, Chanson. £57.00. This site has produced a wonderfully lip-smacking wine full of succulent berry fruit, a mix of both red and darker black fruits adds to the interest but with a lovely juicy damson finish.

Loire Valley

66        2019 St-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Les Graviers, Domaine du Bourg, Loire. £35.70. With its warmer climate, red wines from the Loire make great wines. This wine is generous, ripe red and forest fruit on the nose, with a refreshing acidity and delicate mineral finish on the palate.

Rhône & South of France

70        2022 Côte du Rhône, Les Terres du Roy. £31.00. Ripe aromas of jammy dark fruit, cherry, liquorice and spices with very mellow tannins and crisp acidity.

72       2021 Crozes Hermitage, Maison les Alexandrins. £43.00. Aromas of ripe black cherry, violets and blackberries, notes of tobacco and sweet spice combine with silky, well-integrated tannins

76        2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape, Closerie de Vaudieu ’Château de Vaudieu’. £49.85. A stunning example of what this well-known region does so well - berry, liquorice and black pepper on the nose, ripe tannins with cassis and herb character to finish.

78        2012 Cornas, Les Mejeans, Jean-Luc Colombo. £49.50. Grapes from the foothills of Cornas are employed to make this intensely fruity and fresh wine. Shows raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry with floral hints as well as some coffee and spice notes. Aged for a year in one and two-year-old barrels.

100      2021 Chianti, Poggiotondo. £34.65. This organic wine is deep red in colour. The nose is elegant with a blend of ripe dark fruits and a hint of earthiness. The palate has supple, velvety tannins with flavours of spicy, sweet dark cherry and wild hedgerow and a soft mouthfeel leading to a long complex finish. (Vegan)

106      2020 Amarone Della Valpolicella, Alpha Zeta. £56.00. Deep and intense with dried cherries and blueberries, complemented by spiced autumn  fruit compote and savoury cherry fruit character.

114      2020 Primitivo di Puglia, A Mano. £29.15. This wine is deep red in colour. On the nose, there are intense aromas of ripe dark fruit, especially raspberries and cherries, with spicy notes of cocoa, lavender and liquorice. On the palate, it is youthful and full-bodied, with a great concentration of ripe, rounded fruit and full tannins. It is a very elegant, fresh and complex Primitivo.

116      2018 Barolo Corino, Del Comune di La Morra, Piemonte. £68.25. This wine is bright garnet in colour. It has delicate aromas of red cherries, liquorice with a hint of smokiness. The palate is intense showing notes of dried raspberry jam, mushrooms and tar. Medium bodied, this wine has lifted aromatics and bright fruit.

Spanish & Portuguese Red Wine

119      2021 Mas Oliveras “Oak-Aged Tempranillo” Bodegas Roqueta, Catalonia Spain. £26.75. A wonderful wine with juicy fruit characters with hints of liquorice.  Soft and approachable with depth and structure, fine tannins and fresh acidity.

120      2016 Rioja Crianza, Reserva Eguren Ugarte. £33.00. A superb and complex Rioja, 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano. This wine has had 24 months oak ageing and a minimum of 18 months in the bottle. This Rioja produced by Eguren Ugarte is deep, smooth and concentrated with that lovely balance between vanilla oak and gentle fruit flavours.                             

122      2019 Quinta de Chocapalha Tinto, Estremadura, Portugal. £35.20. This wine was aged for 18 months in two & three year old American oak. A deep plum ruby colour, this offers rich cherries & blueberries on the nose, sweet, delicately spiced & concentrated with a floral lift.  The palate mirrors the aromatics presented on the nose. Fine and rounded & supported by ripe, well integrated tannins.

124      2021  Bobal, Cien Y Pico, En Vaso, Manchuela. £35.75. A vibrant nose which shows abundant fruit, along with chocolate and earthy notes. Blackberries, blackcurrant and cinnamon spice, along with cocoa and mulberry on the palate. It is soft with juicy tannins, and an uplifting fresh fruit finish.

126      2011 Valudero, Reserva, Ribera Del Duero, Spain. £64.50. I bought this wine en primeur and then had to wait for 4 years to get to the hotel. The wait was worth it. Made from a low yielding variety of the Tempranillo grape. Then aged in American and European oak barrels for 30 months and then a further 18 months in the bottle before release. It is deep purple in colour. Aromas of blackberry, violets and cedar with hints of coffee. Elegant, smooth textured with excellent depth and long finish.

127      2013 Dalmau, Rioja, Marques de Murrietta. £117.00. Dalmau Reserva is a red wine from the D.O. La Rioja produced by the Marqués de Murrieta winery. This wine is a blend of Tempranillo (79%), Cabernet Sauvignon (15%) and Graciano (6%). Dalmau Reserva is aged for 19 months in French oak barrels from Allier and is refined for another twelve months in the bottle.

Lebanese Red Wine

128      2016 Château Musar, Gaston Hochar, Bekaa Valley. £69.85. This iconic wine uses 3 varietals of cabernet sauvignon, cinsault and carignan. Gives a crimson colour with generous red and black fruits. The palate has the red fruits combined with Christmas cake spices, figs and dates. Good acidity and silky tannins with a great finish.

South African Red Wine

135      2019 Pinotage, Rhebokskloof Vineyards, Paarl. £32.55. The wine shows complex dark fruit flavours with notes of blackberry and hints of soft oak spices. The rounded tannins fill the palate and nuances of dried fruit flavours linger on the after taste.

136       2019 Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot Nelson’s Estate, Paarl. £39.90. This rich, chocolaty Bordeaux style blend is made at Nelson family wine estate, on the seaward side of the Paarl Mountain. Its proximity to the ocean gives relief from warm daytime temperatures, bringing a fresh elegant acidity to the wine itself.

137      2018 Shiraz, Nelson Estate, Paarl. £43.55. Alan Nelson's Shiraz is a perfect example, with silky dark fruit, rich mocha notes and a smoky finish.

138      2017 Chakalaka, Spice Route, Swartland. £33.00. Aromas of blackberries and figs, combined with notes of nutmeg, dark chocolate and pastry. Well-structured with rich tannins, a balanced acidity and a long, lingering finish.   

English Red Wine

Winbirri vineyards are situated in Norfolk. Lee Dyer, the owner and winemaker was thrilled to win the top award for his Bachus wine in 2015. 

604      2019 Signature, Winbirri Vineyards, Surlingham, Norfolk. £33.00. This bold red, is bursting with rich plum and dark berry fruits. Spicy with notes of coffee and blackberries and slightly toasted having been aged in oak.

150      2022 Malbec, Amalaya, Calchaqui Valley. £30.50. An intensely fruity wine, packed with flavours of red berries, raspberries and plums as well as touches of spice and chocolate.

154      2021 Merlot, Fog Mountain, California. £33.00. This medium bodied Merlot has soft tannins and flavours of black cherry and chocolate, complemented by notes of cinnamon and vanilla.

156      2020 Zinfandel, Deloach Vineyard, Heritage Collection, California. £33.00. This typically Californian wine is full bodied and rich with spice. Flavours of ripe strawberry, raspberry, and blackberry blend nicely with notes of blackcurrant and molasses.

158      2017 Purple Angle, Montes, Colchagua Valley. £87.50. Aromas of blackberries and figs, combined with notes of nutmeg, dark chocolate and pastry. Well-structured with rich tannins, a balanced acidity and a long, lingering finish.

Australian and New Zealand Reds

166      2019 Shiraz, Dandelion Vineyards, Barossa Valley, South Australia. £32.00. Intense crimson with youthful purple hues. Generous, mouth-filling sweet blackberries, raspberries and plums cover the palate with lashings of sweet spice. Firm but fine tannins and dark chocolatey nuances continue throughout the lengthy palate with a youthful finish.

168       2018 Cabernet Sauvignon, Jester, Mclaren Vale, South Australia. £35.70. Deeply coloured, with ripe black fruits, bramble, tobacco leaf, menthol and dark chocolate notes. Ripe tannins and mouth-watering acidity frame this rich, full bodied wine.

174      2017 Syrah, Elephant Hill, Hawkes Bay, North Island. £39.50. Elephant Hill is a leading light in the Hawkes Bay region, Seductive black fruit, cracked pepper and spice. An elegant, rather than powerful Syrah, more in common with the Northern Rhône than the New World.

 176     2021 Pinot Noir, ME by Matahiwi Estate, Wairarapa, New Zealand. £35.20. A vibrant Pinot Noir with lifted dark plum and cherry aromas, with a generous fleshy palate complimented by hints of spiced oak.

200      2022 Chardonnay Bourgogne Blanc, Louis Jadot. £38.50. A round buttery Chardonnay from one of Burgundy’s leading houses. Full of balance, depth of flavour and finesse.

208      2022 Chablis, Guillaume Virgnaud. £48.00. This wine is pale yellow in colour with youthful reflections. The nose marries ripe citrus notes of lemon and lime with delicate floral aromas. On the palate, it is well-balanced with a great intensity of flavour.

210      2021 Montagny 1er Cru Olivier Leflaive Bonneveaux. £63.00. Ripe, yet refreshing, dry white, packed with Chardonnay fruitiness. From the top producer.

211      2022 Macon Villages, Domaine Perraud. £37.25. Lively citrus acidity and flavours of fruit salad including melon, peach and a hint of pineapple. Minerally and long on the finish.

212      2021 Saint – Véran, Domaine Corsin. £39.90. A beautifully clean and crisp wine with excellent fruit.

214      2020 Chassagne-Montrachet, Cuvée Prestige, Capuano Ferreri. £80.00. Beautiful golden colour of strong intensity, fine and complex, with intermingled aromatic notes of baked bread, white peach & honey, with a nice potential for aging.

216      2020 Pernand-Verglelesses, Les Caradeux, Premier Cru, Chanson. £62.50. A focused, lemon-tinged white, whose linear profile and lively acidity corral the citrus, stone and spice notes on the lingering finish.

217     2020 Puligny-Montrachet, Domaine Alain Chavy. £91.00. Golden appearance, bursting with ripe tropical fruit; pineapple and guava. This is balanced by a concentrated jet of lime acidity and a fragrance of spicy oak on a medium to full palate, with lingering texture on the finish. 

218     2020 Meursault  Village, Domaine Alain Chalet & Fils. £65.00. Exotic, intensely mineral notes appear on the nuanced bouquet. Energetic, vibrant and beautifully layered freshly cut flowers, crushed rocks and vibrant citrus notes.

Loire Valley

244      2022 Vouvray, Sec, Les Bosquets. £33.00. Dry white wine with a light yellow colour and golden tint. This wine has a bouquet of white flesh fruits  (quince) and flowers (acacia). Supple and long in the palate, it is a very refreshing wine.

248      2021 Sancerre, Chateau de Thauvenay. £44.50. A calassic Sancerre, the nose displays aromas of white flowers and subtle citrus notes with a core of refreshing acidity on the palate, enhanced by a stony mineral freshness, bright citrus and stone fruit notes and a long, saline finish.

250      2021 Pouilly-Fumé, Les Chaumierres, André Figeat. £36.25. André Figeat sealed his fate as a vigneron when he fell in a vat of pressed juice at age 2! Now the family winemaker with state-of-the-art equipment, André selects Sauvignon blanc grapes from individual sites according to their character. Fossil-rich, flinty soil gives this zesty, mineral Pouilly-Fumé its characteristic smokiness.

Alsace

270      2020 Gewurztraminer Reserve Cave de Hunawihr, Klevner. £37.25. The Gewurtztraminer is picked at optimum ripeness, giving the final wine layered flavours of rose petals, lychee, mango. The wine is full-bodied yet refreshing with crisp acidity, and a rose-petal perfume on the finish.

272      2022 Riesling, Reserve, Cave de Hunawihr, Klevner. £37.25. This wine is an elegant straw yellow in colour with youthful tints. The nose is complex with aromas of citrus, pear, white flowers and a touch of minerality. The palate is lively and is bursting with citrus flavours. The finish is long and refreshing.

278      2019 Pinot Blanc, Klevner. £31.50. A blend of micro-parcels from the Hunawihr vineyards, the Pinot Blanc grapes are selected individually to ensure the very best quality. On the palate, the wine is rich and silky, a lovely bouquet of lemon and pear continues on the long finish.

282      2011 Riesling, Trimbach, Cuvée Frederic Emile. £75.00. Delicious with fish, poultry and veal and sea scallops. Traditionally served in Alsace with goose and pork and with Alsacian meats. Very attractive already, quite powerful nose. Full bodied wine with intensity, depth and beautiful mineral flavour. Rich, ripe acidity in the palate. Great personality and finesse. Full of charm already, will develop for another 20 years.

302      2020 Piesporter Michelsberg, Qualitatswein, Schmitt Sohne. £26.25. Flowery, smooth and gently fruity medium Mosel, with a refreshing acidity.
